Interesting Fact: Cordoba is bordered by other Andalucian provinces of Malaga, Granada, Seville and Jaen. Northwest is the province of Badajoz of Extremadura and Northeast is Castilla la Mancha's' province of Ciudad Real, .
Cordoba became important as the highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River and was founded by the Romans.
They built the bridge now named El Puente Romano, over the Guadalquivir. The Moors built the Mezquita or Great Mosque a university and library.
The christians reconquered the city in 1236 and were so impressed by the Mezquita that they decided to keep it and build a cathedral in the centre of its arches and columns, making the extraordinary mosque-church. Cordoba has other fine structures. The Alcazar built by the Christians and the Calahorra Fort initially constructed by the Arabs guards the roman bridge. On the far side of the river from the Mezquita, is a museum which is an ancient Jewish Synagogue.
Other notable towns in Cordoba are Montoro, Baena, Lucena, Cabra.
