Interesting Fact: The Iberians were the first occupants of the region followed by the Romans who built a citadel and named it Gerunda. Subsequently the Visigoths and then the Moors conquered Girona and Charlemagne reconquered it in 785 and made it one of the fourteen original countships of Catalonia. Thus it was wrested temporarily from the Moors, who were driven out finally in 1015.

Girona is bordered to the North by the pyrenees and France, Lleida,and Barcelona to the West, and the Mediterranean Sea to the South and East.
Three Main natural parks are:- Parque Natural de Aiguamolls de L'Emporda, Parque Natural de la Zona Volcanica de la Garrotxa, Parque Natural del Cap de Creus.
